Acclaimed Artist Andrew Tyson To Make Houston Debut

HOUSTON (February 17, 2020)Andrew Tyson, an emerging name in classical music, makes his Houston debut performing works by Rachmanninoff, Schumann, and more presented by Society for the Performing Arts (SPA). Tyson’s performance takes place in Zilkha Hall at the Hobby Center on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at 8 pm.

Tyson, who began playing piano at age 15, is lauded in the classical realm winning First Prize at the 2015 Géza Anda Competition, the Terence Judd-Hallé Orchestra Prize, and the 2011 Young Concert Artist International auditions. He has also released three recital albums on the Alpha Classics label, his most recent titled Landscapes

In addition to his performances, Tyson will also visit Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) for a masterclass with piano students. 

“We are absolutely beside ourselves that we have the opportunity to give artist as acclaimed as Andrew Tyson their Houston premiere,” said a member of SPA’s programming team. “It’s also great that he is also taking time while in town to inspire young musicians at HSPVA as part of SPA’s education initiative.”

About Andrew Tyson

Hailed by BBC Radio 3 as “a real poet of the piano,” American pianist Andrew Tyson is emerging as a distinctive and important new musical voice. In summer 2015, he was awarded First Prize at the Géza Anda Competition in Zürich, as well as the Mozart and Audience Prizes. These victories have resulted in numerous performances throughout Europe under the auspices of the Géza Anda Foundation.

As the winner of the Young Concert Artists International auditions in 2011, Tyson was awarded YCA’s Paul A. Fish Memorial Prize and the John Browning Memorial Prize. An Avery Fisher Career Grant soon followed. After early studies with Thomas Otten he attended The Curtis Institute of Music where he worked with Claude Frank. Tyson later studied with Robert McDonald earning his Master’s degree and Artist Diploma at The Juilliard School, winning the Gina Bachauer Piano Competition and receiving the Arthur Rubinstein Prize in Piano.
